Along with my new house, (well, 100 years weak but new to me), I inherited a to some extent 'dead' looking lawn. It was full of dandelions and moss. I dutifully bought the 'weed and feed' from B&Q and inside a few days, it was dying off where on earth the dandilions and moss lived. I painstakingly scraped all of the moss from the garden and dug up the dandilions. I re planted grass seed and for the ultimate two months I have had lush green grass that I be really proud of (mental note to self, I must get a existence!!)
However, I have noticed, only two months later, I have the dreaded dandilions rearing their head again and killing off the grass around their leaves - as they do. I hold pulled them up and am left, once again, with holes contained by my grass!
Has anyone got a magic cure for ridding my grass of these blighters for polite? I know they have long roots, which keep coming put a bet on, but surely, without using a pestacide, which will kill my grass, near must be a way of getting rid of them?
Thanks x
2 words: Dandilion Wine! (ok normally I try to give solid answers but everyone beat me to it! ) Good luck with the grass!
PS: working on your lawn, outside in outlook, and being proud of your work is why people enjoy flower gardens! Just because your 'garden' was a lawn, doesn't denote you don't "have a life"! Nice lawns are hard work, so be proud of it! :) hit them next to a blast of undiluted white vinegar, on a fine sunny day, then again next to a strong concoction of baking soda and water, also on a fine sunny day
May sound mechanical, but you did say you need to achieve a life! Get some "Roundup" weedkiller and a paint brush, don,t splash the stuff around, but gently brush respectively dandelion leaf with it, especially the crown. after a maximum of 2 weeks they should start to die, agree to it work, don't remove the leaves until they are definitely dead, repeat the process as needed. You will want to do this as their roots may have little bits surviving after treatment, just continue!
Remove the flowers from any Dandelions before they seed to prevent re infestation, (wet bed are just a myth)! Remember the seed later for a long time, so keep at it. it's the soil conditions underneath the grass that is the problem not the grass itself.Dandelions cannot survive contained by a lawn that is draining properly.Moss also.
So no sleight of hand cure except to put 100s of holes in the lawn and putting sharp sand surrounded by the holes to make water drain from the prairie faster. If it's a small lawn, dig it up and supply a ton of sand and re-create
Answers: Use the Scott grass fertilizer with the weed butchery stuff in it. We had weed all in our courtyard and we used that stuff and havent had a weed in months. I cant exactly remember what it's call, but I know it's made by Scott. I want to say it's Scott weed and feed, but I'm not sure. Also, try to verbs them up before you mow and if you cant pull them, cut the head off while they're still flowers. Good luck!
you could procure a knife and cut them out, cutting a 'cone' around the podium so you get as much of the root out as possible. then sprinkle somewhat salt onto the root to kill it rotten properly - make sure you dont spill it on the grass around it otherwise you will kill that too. however if the dandelions seed before you moved in after there will be lots of seeds lying dormant within the soil and will just keep springing up so you might hold on to having this problem. just craft sure you pull any flowers off up to that time they seed and worsen the problem. the holes in the prairie will be good for aereating it and making it healthier contained by the long run!
