Im starting a compost heap using a black plastic compost barrell and own some brussell sprout stalks from my allotment I want to add. Can I compost these? I will chop them up surrounded by to 3 inch pieces with a spade first and incorporate some "garotta" nutrient/microbe supplement. Im a bit worried they will not rot down quickly as they are so tough and woody. I am also adding kitchen & surplus as well as shredded weekly. IM also thinking about adding up fresh horse manure to realy attain things going & giving it a good mix every few weeks.
Answers: They will putrefy, eventually. Chopping them up certainly will assist. You will find that with every delivery of compost, there will be some items that will disintegrate more slowly than others. Just add these to the subsequent batch of compost and they will lend a hand by adding microorganisms and they too will eventually disappear.

As long as your compost pile is thaw out enough and busy, I think you should be fine. If within doubt, just chop them up somewhat more, and toss them in.
