my family in recent times trimmed our trees (the sap is suppose to be down) and where we cut it, it have liquid coming out? and it have been for over a week or two. the soft is not sticky and does not appear to be sap. any thoughts?? the tree is a sliver maple.
Answers: Maple sap doesn't come out sticky, it is really very liquid. It takes hours of boiling down to bring in it into a syrup. I'm sure it is sap - the xylem (the little tubes inside the wood) carry sap up from the roots. What I'd hear from the local garden center about pruning my fruit trees be that they don't recommend painting tree wounds anymore, but I'd read (in Roses for Idiots, I think) that you can use white bonding agent to close wounds - i guess because it is water soluble and will simply keep the insects out for awhile, but not procure in the track of healing. Since your tree doesn't seem to be to be dormant right now, you may want to newly let economically enough alone. I suspect the sap will dry and plug up the ends of the spread out xylem eventually if left alone.
trees can be so sappy sometimes
