Male Woodpeckers 'drum' to attract a mate. when he thinks he have found a suitable nesting place .Normally, being the womanly of the species, they reject it and the poor male have to start all over again. Wrens do indistinguishable thing. It is in general late Feb/early March when you hear them, so 1st Feb is fairly early.
