I got 2 tomato plants a couple of weeks ago and the deer enjoy eaten the entire top slice of one off. They chewed the top stems right past its sell-by date. Can I save my plant? How best to save deer away?
Answers: Plants will be fine as long as there is still green on top. They will simply get wide-ranging (if the entire top is gone). I would use tomato cages made from chain you buy (tall) not the short ones they sell premade. Even the full-size ones premade aren't big enough. I'd use a 5 foot towering wire (comes surrounded by rolls) and you cut out a 7-8 foot section, after roll it into a a cage and attach the 2 ends. You can go and get about 20 out of a 150 foot roll. Don't want that many, don't cut that several. Fencing is always perfect to have around. Also, DO NOT SPRAY DEER REPELLANT ON YOUR PLANTS! Again, DO NOT SPRAY DEER REPELLANT ON YOUR PLANTS! It can be toxic and you are ingestion the fruits! You can spray near by but my gosh be wary. Sorry but that was dire advice.
I contemplate as long as you have a perfect root system in the ground, it should be ok. I know it is discouraging to see most of the plant gone. I reason you can buy spray at the garden center to keep animals away. Another piece you might be able to do is put a flex fence around it.
