Butterfly garden? what do i need and how do i start one?
what do i need and how do i start one?
Answers: I live within USDA Hardiness zone 5 and have a butterfly garden. I've provided protection from the turn, flowers with nectar for food, a marine source with a place to stop, and a pesticide-free environment.
I used a butterfly bush, 'Nanho Purple' as the main nouns of protection and added the other flowers around it. For the other main plants, I used coreopsis 'Early Sunrise' (yellow), and monarda 'Raspberry Wine' (red). As my nouns is fairly voluminous, I included some yarrow, japanese blood grass, blue fescue grass, 'Autumn Joy' sedum, and a couple of daylilies also.
Here's a small picture of it if you'd like to see it: http://www.gardening-quick-n-easy.com/In... ... the monarda is contained by bloom and in red on the vanished. Moving to the right is a clump of yarrow, then the japanese blood grass, consequently the coreopsis with the butterfly bush showing losing it, then the sedum and finally the blue fescue on the cease. A couple of daylilies have be added since the picture was taken.
For dampen, I set out right onto the ground, a medium-sized red ceramic bowl. The bowl is shallow and I put a couple of rocks within the bowl for the butterflies to use to land on when getting a drink.
