Question Details: "Someone" is busily boring a nearly perfect, 1/4 inch hole on the underside of my step guardrail. I can see the debri from the excevation being pushed out of the hole and the tunnel go at least several inches surrounded by a horizontal direction.
We've always have lots of yellow jacket and I know they nest underground but can they bore through wood?
I don't really want to kill if it's not essential since the damage seem to be near done. Besides I don't mind outlook but I've had some hurtful run ins with unharmed swarms of yellow jacket and that can be dangerous. Also, here are neighboorhood kids to think around and allergic reactions.
Anyone know what it might be and if it's perilous?

You mean to say-so that you have just noticed one hole within one rail. Whatever the term, the critter is a wood borer.
don't mean to alarm you, but what have he done already done to the rafters of your roof, your flooring, your walls except a masonry house?

You can do two things. First, a pest exterminator to put prevention everywhere. They know how to safeguard the neighborhood children. Then pray that you are in time.

Saving your pests is allowing them to own a free rein to eat your home. Then you will hold to go somewhere else, anyway.
Answers:    I think it could also be a carpenter bee.
They love antediluvian dried out wood for their nests.
Have you noticed any HUGE bumblebees surrounded by the area.
They hover more than fly. I surmise that other than the interrupt they do to wood that they are as non violent as regular bumbles.
Even if they are carpenter bees, you should protect the rest of your steps, banister and house for that matter!
Replace dried out wood, caulk, paint, newly take common measures to keep the wood treated.
If these guys return with too comfortable you will regret the damage within a year or two!
