how soon will they rebloom and can i use rose food for orchids?
Answers: Your treatment of your Orchid plant somewhat depends on which type of plant that you have.
The most commonly grown Orchids are Phalaenopsis, which have honourably thick fleshy leaves. These will often reflower, shooting from duplicate stems, so I leave my stems after the flowers fall, contained by the hope that it will resprout. This plant likes bright indirect light - avoid scorching difficult sunlight. Don't let it stand in marine, and feed every 2 to 3 weeks during the growing season, especially if you have some Orchid fertilizer. This plant will flower through most of the year, so you may be blessed near flowers in a couple of months, faster if it reblooms on its current stem. Cut the old stem when it starts to die pay for, and dry out. Here's a photo of one, to aid identification: http://www.merklesorchids.com/2Images/27...
Oncidiums - forms false 'bulbs' above soil level, and Cymbidium - long reed resembling leaves, benefit from a period of temperature differential between daylight and night. Both of these I place outdoors during the summer, giving them good indrect bright mostly shaded conditions. Feed again, as per the Phalaenopsis plants. Bring them surrounded by before risk of frost, and aim to keep the hours of darkness temperature a few degrees lower than the morning - this is typical for most homes anyway. These types typically flower in late winter/spring time.
Here's a Cymbidium: http://www.terragalleria.com/studio/pict... and an Oncidium: http://herba.msu.ru/shipunov/e-album/ori... to oblige you identify yours.
With Cymbidiums remove the spent flower stalks as soon as possible, as otherwise this can inhibit reflowering next season.
You may have another Orchid type, but collectively good indirect light, regular feed, don't let them sit in dampen, will keep them in flower as much as possible.
All of these Orchids will benefit from some humidity around them, to maintain them healthier, and you can put some pebbles in a saucer, next to water in, placing the pot onto this. The humidity will rise and surround the plant.
Hope this help. Good luck! Rob
