Advice for a Survival garden? I want to plant a vegetable garden for survival purposes. ...
I want to plant a vegetable garden for survival purposes. We are running out of oil which I believe might bring a collapse of our very grease dependent food system.
Any advice what to grow or good resources websites give or take a few this. Also backyard "Fish farming."
Grow what you close to to eat. It's pretty much that simple.
i would plant things that you would eat if you can them, as they are the easiest to store. we had a big garden when i was growing up, and my mom can lots of tomatoes and green beans, and kept a big bin in the basement full of potatoes and onions. home-grown corn on the odd occasion lasted long enough to be preserved; it be promptly eaten. and don't forget pickles, so if you like pickles and you can kind them, cucumbers are easy to grow. if you have a big freezer, next storing the fruits of your labors (so to speak) would be much easier. Plant veggies that can be canned. Unless you have a really big gardend it will do you no well brought-up. mosst yards are not big enought to grown a large crop of anything..
Answers: Well depending on your current occupation a survival garden might not be enough for you if the grease system blows up. If you have a trade/vocational job consequently, you should be able to barter food and clothing in exchange for your work. If you own a desk job then a garden might be a virtuous idea.
To begin near any garden you need to look at the space you have to work next to and compare it to the kind of veggies and fruits you are trying to grow. Things that grow on a vine needs lot of room to grow, and more contemplation. Where non-vine crops generally don't need deeply of your time, but do need a constant supply of sun and water.
Next, I believe that a survival garden should be of two parts, staple & brass crop garden.
Staple garden - is your own personal garden to feed you and your family. This garden should contain foods that are practical, if it happen to coincide with foods you like to chomp through great, but we are talking about survival not a pleasure garden.
Cash garden - This is stock you can sell/share/trade next to others for things you need. (So next time you call in the grocery store check out what your neighbors are buying). This garden might have some non-practical foods in it. People will other like their luxuries so who are you not to provide it.
With these things in mind you should know how to decide what kind of foods to grow. Once you resolve check the rest of the forum for tips on garden layout and how to grow a successful garden.
P.S.: You should also keep to yourself the purpose of your garden to prevent raiding should the worse comes to past. And you might want to cart up a hobby to help supplement either your income or food supply surrounded by a post oil world.
