Ok so I planted a tomato plant for my boyfriend, as he LOVES 'mater sandwiches...lol
Its growing quite nicley & starting to flower but what Im wondering is this..I am buying a hold for it tomorrow but my question is this..are you suppossed to prune back the branches? By this I mena are you suppossed to clip them pay for shorter to promote a fuller bush? Or do you just cage it & permit it gorw? I just want to produce the best possible plant & the best fruit...Thnks
Just let it grow. You don't want to clip it at all.

yes, a coop over it will help support the heavy branches. at this time of year, you may hold to help it as it's probably getting big by now. the cut of the limbs that should be pinched off is the smaller member that trys to grow in the crease or crotch of any of the main limb. it's always smaller and grows UP not over. ask a neighbor lady over 60 if you're not sure. ok? also miracle grow is a biddable idea. good luck! if you want to grow a biddable tomato buy chiken wire and put it in the floor near verry strong stiks or poles and the vine should catch and grow up but dont face it towrds the sun it will dry out and maintain them moist .
Answers:    Depends what kind of tomato plant it is. Check your sticky label to see if it is a determinate (bush) or indeterminate plant.

If it's determinate, put a cage around it and let it shift. It will fill up the cage beside it's side branches. No pruning needed.

If it's in-determinate, it's supposed to be grown as a vine to produce the best fruit. Put a 6' stake next to it and tie it on, it may even get taller than that. You can prune out the side branches as they sprout from the remnant of the leaves. This will strengthen the main stem (vine) and produce the best fruit on the main stem.
