i would line the brick within the fireplace with fireboard. place a wood burning stove within the fire place,with the exaust tube running up into the chimmney. use fire board to block rotten the
heat from escaping up the chimmney. would this work and be undamaging?
Answers:    I agree with William, and merely have 2 cents to incorporate.

It's pretty obvious to me that a Fireplace is not the most streamlined method of heating, and pushing a wood burning stove into a fireplace gap should be fine if the construction was intended for actual wood fires in the first place.

Part of what might be an issue is any RADIANT steam you might have diminished lacking the "stove" having 360 amount radiant access. Certainly some of the heat go up the chimney, through the stove vent pipe.
