I'm trying to wire an outlet and the cable has a white, black, ground, and red flex. What do I do with the red flex? I tried it using a standard out let next to the silver screws on the not here and the brass on the right. I put the black and red on the right and the white on the left. I have been told to remove a copper piece that runs between the black and red wires. It doesn't work?? Any suggestions?? Thanks!
Answers:    That should own worked. The black should be an always-hot and the red a switched-hot. Removing the tab between them makes one of the outlets other on while the other is controlled by the switch. What exactly do you mean by "It doesn't work"? No power, trips breaker, power surrounded by only one of the outlets...

You really inevitability to use an electrical tester and take a voltage reading from the black to the red cable.
If you read 220, cap the red telecommunication and use the black wire on the gold ingots screw, the white wire on the silver screw, and copper, ground, chain on the green screw.
