Where should I position my furnace emergency shut switch? ...

Answers:    You should have two emergency shut-off switches.
First, if you live within a house:
One should be within smooth reach for the serviceman/woman, if he/she be kneeling down contained by front of your burner... this is so power can be shut off vigorously if something goes wrong while they're servicing it (generally call a "serviceman's switch"; it usually has a red switch plate cover identify it).
The other switch should be at the top of your basement stairs, inside the first floor living space (usually a kitchen)... this is so you can shut bad the power to your furnace without have to go close to the furnace, as per NFPA 31 (since that's where the trouble is). Even if you own a gas appliance, it's not a bad thought.

If you live in a mobile home:
one switch at the furnace (serviceman's switch), and one at the closest exterior exit door for the master bedroom (so the power can be shut past its sell-by date as you're exiting the building, without have to go in close proximity the furnace).
Next to the furnace!
