I'd like to hold Christmas holiday lights on my gate but the distance is far, so would resembling to convert lights for use with solar collectors. Any philosophy and/or instructions would be appreciated. Thanks.
An INVERTER is what you entail to convert the DC from the panels to 120vac for general lighting. However, you may want to consider just DC lighting. Camping and RV supply stores may own party and holiday lighting designed for battery-operated operation.
(The inverter itself will consume electricity in the conversion process. At lowest with DC lighting, you won't hold this waste and stipulation larger panels.)
Any automotive store, Kmart, Walmart get rid of Inverters if you still want to go that route. Wattage (size) will depend on how masses lights and how big your solar panel/battery combo can handle.
LED lights will find you the maximum longevity if you are shopping for the light display as powerfully.
I'm not sure almost this answer, so you'll need to double check it, but I don't come up with that you need a transformer. I ponder that all incandescent lightbulbs are inherently DC.
The TRUE question is whether or not you can procure enough current and/or voltage to generate the lights.
Perhaps an electrical engineer can provide you near more insight. You might want to cross post this in the "engineering" subsection.

AN UPDATE
On a hunch, I did a quick trellis search for "solar holiday lights" and in that are places that sell kit of solar panels and holiday lights combined. If you haven't already bought the lights, or if you are feeling like to splurge on a new set, you might want to consider purchasing a unharmed kit - panel and lights.

They are everywhere and of hundreds of brands. Cheapies to high dollar brands. I own bought a few of the cheap inverters before for roughly the same price as the fitting brand names. I really dream up you should get for a time better brand then a walmart or kmart brand. Or you will newly be buying a new one every few months to replace the cheapie that merely quit working like a neutral bulb that burnt out beside no warning.
First of all you would stipulation to use the solar to charge a battery. Otherwise when it is DARK the panel would not make any electricity to power the lights. Next you would stipulation an inverter to make the coup¨¦ battery you charged produce 120vac.
You might find it easier to buy mobile operated lights.
