Answers: Oh My! You do have an ancient house! This is a Surface mount skeleton key lockset. It will require an outdated skeleton type key. Your best bet for getting a knob that fits well is to remove the lock and give somebody a lift it to your local locksmith. You can find some keys at elder hardware stores but they are generic and may not be the best fit.
First remove the knob. There is a screw in the nouns of the knob that must be removed, and then the knob itself can be unscrewed, and remove the stem. Four screw hold the body of the lock to the door and then the lock can be removed. If you lug a razor and gain the paint around the lock it will come off easier and not verbs off a sizeable patch of paint with it.
Reassembly is a reverse of the removal proceedure.
While you at the lockshop, he/she can assist you within replacement parts or a replacement lockset. (yes they do still have these surrounded by the catalogs!)
It looks like a porcelain knob. Check this website.
