Smoke alarm contained by dorm? i placed a hat over my smoke detector within my dorm room...

i placed a hat over my smoke detector within my dorm room (for decoration) and the alarm went bad briefly.. this must have be because of the trapped heat, but i saw someone who placed a rucksack over theirs because they smoked in their room and it didnt be in motion off... if i tried to put a pack over my alarm would it go bad? why would a hat set it stale and not a bag? too afraid to try it

Answers:    Smoke detectors are actuate by heat, they are set sour by smoke particles. There are a few different types out here. In a dorm I'd expect to find the infrared type. In the detector there is a infrared LED and optical LED. When smoke particle OR dust particles kicked up by some placing a head covering in it (ahem) it go into alarm mode. Your friend placed a bog over it with out it going sour out of luck but as a few people said past and it is true, tampering beside fire alarm systems is a crime and you will be held liable if something goes wrong.
Remember these systems are at hand to protect you so please don't mess with them.

dunno, but i used to smoke within my dorm room and the alarm didn't go rotten.. do it by a window next to it open and of late blow ur smoke out the window. if you're smoking cigarettes, only just go outside! gross.
