my house was built within 1980's. Im fiting a new desk light to the ceiling. There is a red, blue and a brown wire contained by the cable. Which colour is live and which colour is neutral.
Answers:    within the UK and Ireland the red wires are alive the black is common ground and the green or green/yellow are top soil grounds. On the lights the brown is for the live side, and the blue is common ground and green and grn/yellow are earth
to make sure what is what, a elect.tester on respectively wire to grounded source, will put in the picture u hot wires, and a electrical meter that does volts and olms take other wires that are not hot and read what they are to ground , the one that have a resistance is the ground wire and the other may show some small amount of voltage it will be the colourless.
