The radiators in our house are nearly 20 years old, installed by the previous occupant. The supply/return pipes are 10mm and are both located at base of radiator and both on same side, which I cogitate is a bit unusual. I've put a photo on Flickr to illustrate: http://www.flickr.com/photos/22839368@N0...

Can anyone tell me if they are suitable for a competent DIYer to install thermostatic valve on ... and any recommendation? Energy cost saving is a factor but not the solitary one. We're redecorating and the stopcock is going to be accessible but a bit awkward to get to and I hope a thermostat might make smaller the number of times we have to draw from down on all fours to adjust it.
Answers:    This type of project would hold to be done when the heat is OFF. Unless you own a way of isolating that nouns that you plan on working in/on. Steam is nothing to play next to, once it touches you're skin. You won't have any departed. Or if it's hot water & it "flashes" into steam your REALY screwed. So simply take the sanctuary measures & turn the boiler OFF & close the header before working on this.

-You shouldn't own any trouble changeing it over. Just make sure the union & fittings match. Use alike type of pipe, if needed take some apart earlier buying the thermostatic valves. So that the pipe diameters are duplicate.

Good Luck & becareful
