The sturdiest bunkbeds ever made be made by the Cargo company and its offshoots similar to Barn Door.
These have a super-simple construction.
If the plea you want to build them yourself is to save money, you might be pleasantly surprised if you check your local craigslist. Off and on, I've see Cargo bunkbed sets that retailed for over a thousand dollars get sold for as little as $150. I'm not sure you can build them for that!
