When we had our home built, the attic access is within the hallway. They cut the hole for the attic side to side surrounded by the ceiling. My husband is telling me that it needed to run the other way to install a stepladder. I say purely make it a square and install the stepladder. Obviously, neither one of us knows what we are doing. Help????
Answers: OK, I'm going to do something I don't typically do. DO NOT MODIFY TRUSSES TO ACCOMMODATE A PULL DOWN LADDER.
Sorry for the yelling, but explicitly a big no-no. Trusses are build to support certain loads, the bottom cord anyone in tautness. If you compromise the bottom cord, you have the possibility of the walls bowing out.
The justification the framers framed in the attic access they did may be because the trusses run perpendicular to the corridor. As someone one said there are sliding ladder that may fit. If worse comes to worse, use a 6' step ladder to catch in the attic.
But short consultation with a cook up or contractor, never ever ever modify trusses. Not matter what you do, please don't do that.
they get rid of Attic stairways at Lowe's and the such, you get the complete unit and install that. You stipulation to know how high the ceiling is so you could grasp the right one
