Answers:    I have a Jet mini lathe...the model that this one replaced. I replaced it with a larger lathe. It's a clearly good lathe and even have an available bed extension so you can work on pieces up to 40" long. The only entity this one doesn't have is erratic speed. Not a big deal for a chess set, but for larger items it would be adjectives. It's another $80 on top of the one you're looking at. The tools are HSS (high speed steel), which way they're at least serviceable and will receive you started. By the way, check out Craigslist within your area. There are at least possible 7 for sale around the country right very soon.

Also, do not compare this lathe to anything you might purchase at Harbor Freight. I have stuff from Harbor Freight, but I hold seen their lathe and it is serious cast-offs.
