There are some polyurethane/paint suppliers that manufacture it safe to use indoors and such (not to eat).
They sign them as "low VOC" (Volatile Organic Compounds) this mainly focuses around the fumes it emit when it dries (even after). When someone buy s a new home or motor and it has that "strange smell" that's a form of VOC. It's called formaldehyde. Almost every product uses some form of formaldehyde; usually its within glues/ paints or dyes.
