Im staying in a dorm next year. I be thinking some kind of base to droop the lanterns from.

Answers:    Here's a couple of planning :)

First, you can hang them from the ceiling using a tiny straight pin ~ such as the type you pin clothes with. A straight pin is strong adequate to suspend a paper lantern but won't leave a definite hole when it is removed.

Second, you can string fishing line from one corner of your room ~across the diagonal~ to the other corner, and hang your lantern from that. Again, a tiny pin can be nailed into the corners to secure the strip and no one would notice.

To attach a little to what "jeanbug" proposed: if the span across the room is too far, just put a couple more supporting pins out surrounded by the middle. Hang them on the wall with plant hangers.
