Answers:    I removed one for a remodel one time and the top of the shaft was connected to a bracket that be screwed into one of the rafters within the attic.

There are usually screws surrounded by the side of it attaching it to the cabinets and sometimes near are screws within the top of it,too. There might also be some in the top that are out of sight.
