I hold one chimney but 2 fireplaces, one of which is surrounded by the crypt. I want to attach a wood stove to the one in the basement. Will i still be capable of use the one...

in the basement. Will i still be capable of use the one above it to burn a fire or will it be unusable with the wood stove being used? the house be built in 1950.
Hello,,it depends on how airtight they are. you should be able to use the one, but remember the warmness build up in the chimney is going to get dignified. do you have a ceramic liner? You want to own it checked out really good, I had a attic fire one time because the mortar be missing in an out of sight place. Gotta draw from some kind of liner/stove pipe. You will still be able to use the fireplace on the upper horizontal. there will be no problem using the upper one.

Fireplaces are never interconnected to the same flue, as the draught would be variable, next to the possibility of smoke entering the room of the one above, or with a temperature inversion, the smoke from the upper one may enter the vault.
I would suggest that you do a " dry " run, by lighting a fire of newspapers and green grass to ascertain which one is which,
One of the flues may be bricked up.
Answers:    You can do this and use them both. You have one chimney but it contains 2 or 3 flues; they're adjectives separate. My home was built in 1956. It have a basement flue for the water heating system and two separate flues on the first floor for two separate fireplaces.
