Answers: You stipulation to remove the p-trap. It's the P-shaped pipe immediately beneath the sink. Easily removed with a wrench, or your hand if you're feeling strong. Have a bucket handy because there's a bit water contained by there.
Nothing will remove discouraging rust - it's the pipe breaking down. But surface rust can sometimes be removed with steel wool. Try an SOS or Brillo wipe.
