Hi, our deck is 10 yrs old and there are splinters adjectives over. We have a 3 yr old and he is worried to go on the deck without shoes because of the number of times we have to remove splinters from his feet.
What is the best and economical way to resurface the deck, to remove splinters - we are thinking of replacing it next to a composite or vinly deck. Is there a better way? If not, which deck stuff is best and where can be get the bits and pieces for a good deal contained by northern VA. Thanks tons for your suggestions,
replace it , you have no choice. Do not use a composite that is not a renewable resource. Stay next to timber. still the best a good timber should last a long time. Do not use untreated timbers as they with the sole purpose have a short life span But that also depends how much rainfall you get etc I just re surfaced my deck near a floor sanding machine from a tool rental.Make sure the screw or nail are below the surface of the wood and sand and stain.My deck looks like new.
The most economical method would be to resurface the existing deck with a drum floor sander. The nails or screw will have to be counter sunk to keep from tear up your belts, of course, but then you can grease seal or apply one of many preservatives that are on the souk. If you stay on top of keeping it sealed every few years, it can finishing for decades. as the deck is nailed in, don.t re-sand, you'll regret it. Don't flip it over as the deck underside will not be apt, and removing the deck nails will take copious hours.
Have the decking replaced. You can do it yourself.Or hire someone. composite decking is well-mannered if you plan to stay in the home, and recover the investment. don't repair the inspired.

I would progress for the composit stuff. If you sand the old one you will have like peas in a pod problem in a few years. Rip up the deck boards and put down new 2 by things (2 x 4s, 2 x 6s).
