Im wiring my house beside cat5. I already located the top of the wall, it is covered with a wooden plank (a 2x4 I don`t know?). I started drilling into this with a 5/8" drill bit, give or take a few 5 inches long. I drilled as far as my drill bit would allow and still didn't reach the slit of the wall. Anyone have any perception how deep I necessitate to drill to reach the useless space between the walls? I'm planning getting a 1 foot drill bit tomorrow, see how that works out.
Depending on the age of your house or the location of where you are drilling. A typical wall single has 2 top plates (3" thick) so your 5" bit should be cavernous enough.

A nouns bearing spar comes to mind however. if this is the case do not drill through it that will debilitate it, and in the shield of a disaster if the insurace company would happen to see that you drilled a hole through a nouns bearing floor joist then your policy would be worthless. The claims adjuster would read aloud that you comprimised the structural integrity of the building causing the collapse (not feasible that a small hole would do that, but that is what they would voice. and then you would not seize any money for your house)

I would suggest getting a stud finder to see how far down you would have to step. My advise to you is to find a unknown location for your wire. Not what you required to do probably but would be the safest thing to do.

Hope this help and good luck
are you sure you are drilling above the right room? I would drive a long nail from the room, into the attic, once you hold done that go contained by the attic and look for the nail. consequently drill thru the ceiling This should work I would hold off in the end 1' drill bit you may be going in to another room or even outside. hope this help. Good luck

You are going to be going into probably 3-4" of your top plate have you tried moving the hole in the order of 6" away maybe you are going into a stud running vertically also. I thought you be just trying to achieve thru the drywall try moving the hole a little if that dos'nt work. you may hold to spring for that one footer after all. agree to me know
Answers:    a couple of points; re edit #2, "the relinquish space between two walls", could you be drilling into a header that is spanning an exit between those two walls? next, as far as the drill bit you are using, if you are using a spade bit you can buy extensions for them that attach near a set screw for more length. and, check out installers bits when you hit the store. you can get them around 18" long, that isn't too long believe me, look for them within the electrical dept. they even have huge 4' bits near flexible shafts, that electricians use for drilling up or down inside of a wall. just a few thoughts to stir along with the others thinking. good luck, hope it adjectives works out for ya.
I'm sure you did this but do it again remeasure so that you know you're drilling within the right place. Also you may be drilling in to horizontal strut that is resting on the wall that you are trying to get into. Don't drill a big hole, and don't trademark swiss cheese out of it! Let me know by giving me best answer points if I'm right:-)
