The electric code thus states that "extension cords are not to be used surrounded by place of permanent building electrical system." What that means is, they are fine to run a drill or a trouble wispy, but not to be used permanently or for long period of time to power things that should actually be plugged into a receptacle contained by the wall. If you need a receptacle somewhere, hold one installed. That is much cheaper than a fire.
