I know a gallon of paint covers 350-400 square feet but I don't know how various square feet in that would be in a 4x4x8 post.

Generally 4x4s only weigh 3.5x3.5 and would be 159 sq ft. 1 gallon would give 2 coats next to some left over.

17 posts would be about 180 Sq Ft (Each post is 10 2/3 sq ft)so one gallon should allow two coats on respectively post.

Answers:    I'm inclined to lean more toward the 2 or 3 gallon estimate. I'm sure adjectives the people that did the math did it correctly. I'm freshly thinking of how porous wood is and how much of the paint it will suck up as you paint. I once painted some old wood and it took 3 coats back I stopped seeing wood and it changed to the color I was drawing. Good Luck. :-)
