Answers: Without knowing at all where on earth you are; the size of the generator; it's fuel capacity or method; any code issues you might encounter; it could be right against the structure, shielded obviously.
In emergencies here within FL; I often fire it up within the garage; leaving VENTING. Obviously that won't ever be reccomended; but enduring situations dictate procedures.
