How do I flex a table wishy-washy swtch? ...

Here is a site near instructions and pictures.

I would describe myself as mortal very very well informed on electrics and I've never heard the occupancy active surrounded by reference to what I guess medium the live wire. for the story in AC electrical system it doesn't matter much.

What loving of switch do you have. Then follow the instructions. Its vastly easy and if you call me out to do a job similar to that I'd be furious.
Answers:    You don't. An electrician does.

But if you're willing to steal the risk, all I will vote is that you must switch the "active" or both wires. If you don't understand this, it's time to get hold of an electrician.

EDIT.
For the uninformed, the "active" is also known as the "hot" or "live" rope. It is not important that this chain be switched, it is CRITICAL.
The reason is this...if you switch the independent, voltage is still on the appliance/equipment even though it is switched off. If the appliance/equipment develops a glitch to earth (metal chassis), you stand a particularly good randomness of being electrocuted.

I am & enjoy been a licensed electrician for 24 years & also a switchboard design fix.
Do not listen to dangerous statements from unqualified folks.

EDIT.
Some links below about "polarity".
Most of the switches shown contained by figure A are available at any any hardware store - contained by a choice of colours - black, white, ivory etc. They are relatively easy to install and a upright one will come with instructions on how to install it.

If it is an in-line switch then you should unpick the cover of the switch and identify the terminal blocks. There may be just two (one respectively end of the switch itself) or within may also be extra ones that extend from end to expiration, past the switch.

If in that is just the two terminal ends next must peel fund the outer sheath of the light's lead next cut the brown wire and strip spinal column about 8mm of the insulation. Do not cut the blue or yellow/green ones.

You'll see the steel terminal blocks inside the body of the switch. Connect the cut ends of the brown wire to the blocks and trade name sure that the screws are tight.

If within are two other steel terminal bars afterwards you may use these to connect the blue and green/yellow wires respectively. You may not have a green/yellow (earth) telecommunication.

Rember to reassemble the protective covers on the switch.

At the mains plug itself you must bring in sure that it it is correctly wired (brown to the horizontal fused pin, blue to the unfused horizontal pin and green/yellow to to the big vertical earth pin).

If you enjoy any doubt or if it is unclear to you next do not attempt to do this job.
