i'm renovating my bathroom. do i really need to put a vapor enclosure between the studs and the backerboard? i'm afraid that if i don't do it perfectly later it will trap moisture instead of keeping it out.
Answers:    what do you plan on finishing it with? tile, i would guess since you are using backerboard. no the tile and grout should form satisfactory of a barrier. newly use pressure treated if your worried. i would however put a rubber membrane on the floor and some of the way up the walls aft the backer board.
There is a paint-on waterproofing membrane that can and should be put on the INSIDE of the backerboard no situation what the backerboard you are using (Durock, Hardi-Backer) after you have put up the underwriter. It is called Red Guard Waterproofer, it is available at most big box stores and unquestionably at tile specialty stores. Paint this stuff on the inside of your backer and will be no necessitate for a vapor barrier on the studs. This stuff become a vapor AND moisture barrier, plus is much smaller amount of a pain surrounded by the a** to install! BTW this should NOT be used to replace the rubber floor membrane mentioned previously.
