Answers: Well, first off.. why isnt it working?
There are two supporting types of dado sets... stacking and dial. In a stacking set, you use a combination of blades and shims to get the desired span. In a 'dial' set, the blades actually run at an angle to respectively other, and you can 'dial' the width you want.
You mention an insert... do you be a sign of a dado part, or the throat insert? (The piece the saw blade pokes up thru). When using a dado set, it is commonly necessary to create a spanking new throat insert. You can make these out of hardboard, plywood, or purchase blanks made of nylon. They are usually held within place by allen screws or flat head. The insert would be placed in the saw table, secured, and later the blade, or dado set, would be gradually raise thru the insert, while running.
Here is a link to some inserts... some of which you can cut to custom fit any saw throat channel - http://www.rockler.com/search_results.cf...
Good Luck
I just use a Freud 8" dado set bought at the local lowes for in the region of 100.00 on my craftsman table saw. works great.
