I am recoating a piece of furniture that I used oil base MinWax polyurethane on previously.
I finally invested in a HVLP spray gun and would approaching to use faster drying finish and I am thinking Varnish would be a candidate.
Can I apply varnish over grease based polyurethane ?
How in the order of water base varnishes over grease poly ?
Thanks, Mike
Answers: If you are using a true varnish, it will take a great deal longer for it to dry than a fast drying poly, dampen based or an grease. Before you put anything over the Minwax product it is imperative that you sand the surface and then wipe it down really very well with mineral spirits. HVLP's are great when you do the right prep work and dutiful top coats. Take a look at a product made by ZAR, called Oil modified urethane(OMU), this will tender you an amazing finish with the hvlp. www.ugl.com/zar...
poly over varnish yes . varnish over poly no! the likelihood of you getting cottage cheese are great.
