Why do we need to own a building permit to finish our basements.I be told also that once you finish your basement your taxes jump up?Is there anyway around this legaly?I hear once that if you finish your basement but depart from something out your taxes stay put.

Put really they want to inspect added electric, plumbing and HVAC systems that may have be added.
I live in Wisconsin and we don't hold to have a building area monopoly to finish our basement, but we do if we want to replace a picture pane...figure that one out?

Answers: You are turning unfinished space into finished living space, so the assessor very soon says that they home is more advisable. Your assessment value go up, your property taxes go up. And specifically why they want permits pulled. So they can hold track of property improvements, report the improvements to the assessors and levy more taxes. See why they keep an eye on improvements, even projects approaching finishing a basements. Now part of it is to gross sure you are doing safe level work, but yep part of it is hang on to up with property improvements for the assessors.
As far as departure something out, IDK. If you do that, then the appraiser, when you run to sell, can utter it isn't livable space, and may not add convenience from an appraisal point of view. See the catch-22. Of course, it wouldn't prevent someone from seeing the potential. But I'd suggest you do everything on the up and up. Pull your permit, get your inspections, and when you provide, pay your taxes (err!), and grasp as much money out of the improvements as possible.
