Answers: Snip off the outside run out with a double act of cutters and push the rest into the wall. Then spackle the wall hole.
Why are you removing them? It would be much easier to fill them and paint over them... If you are intent on taking them out, I own found that bending the outside edges up and grabbing them next to a pair of needlenose pliers works okay.
