Accckkk! My husband put way too much stain on the dining room table that he is refinishing for me...its be a week and the stain..without polyurithaine is still tacky/sticky...how can I fix it??
Answers: As already mentioned, you can remove most of the stain near whatever solvent is nominated on the can. It'll say something similar to 'may be cleaned with...' If it is an grease based stain, you can use mineral spirits (AKA paint thinner) Dampen a cloth with the solvent and wipe a small screened-off area of the table. The excess stain will come off. You will obligation lots of clean rag in lay down to avoid simply smearing the stain around. When one rag is covered beside stain, get a foreign one. Remember that these solvent/stain filled rag are combustible and can even self combust if you leave them wadded up, so go and get them out of your house when you're done.
Also know that eventually the stain will dry on it's own. It's a matter of waiting for the solvent possessor to evaporate. This doesn't speak to how good or doomed to failure the table top will look; only that it will some sunshine dry enough to top coat. Even beside the solvent rag method of removal, some of the stain, that which have penetrated the wood, will remain. It will likely be crucial to re-stain (lightly) the top in lay down to blend the surface.
