i don't want a metal one, but one of those shorter wooden ones. i don't even know where to fire up looking for them! thanks!
Furniture stores. Lowes or Home Depot might enjoy them.
I saw some at Canadian Tire a few weeks ago. If you want something more "homey", try a local craft show. Often there will be nation there displaying woodwork -- and if they don't enjoy one on display, ask if they'd be willing to craft one.
Alternatively ask your local high conservatory if they have a wood-working program. Simple step stools are impeccable shop projects. I'm sure I've made half a dozen myself over the years. Some student might be ready to make one for you as his course project.
Check near your local community center. Many of them have workshops and guide courses in straightforward woodworking that you can take and kind the stools as your course project.
If your city has a Society for Retired and Semi-Retired, christen them. Many have seniors who would love to do a touch project like this. Many enjoy newsletters or bulletin boards where you can post a "Wanted" catch sight of.
Or you could just post a "Wanted" concentration on the bulletin board at your local supermarket.
Finally, give serious consideration to building your stools yourself. The simply tools needed would be a medium-fine tooth cross-cut saw, a drill and a set of drill bits and screwdriver bits -- and some coarse, medium and fine sandpaper. Buy some 1 x 4 or 1 x 6 clear pine or fir lumber and a box of 1 1/2" #8 screw at your local Home Depot. Draw yourself a little plan showing adjectives the dimensions, cut your lumber to size and screw it all together.
For legs, you can use lumber or you can buy pre-made legs surrounded by a variety of styles and sizes.
Sand everything smooth and contribute it all a couple of coats of Ureathane or paint. Alternatively you can cover it near naughahide either pad with foam or glue on. You'll have fun doing the project and if you do it next to care and attention to planning and detail, own a bit of furniture you can display with pride.
Good luck
