That $100,000 to $250,000 is true for the top designers in Manhattan, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc. but isn't representative. Most populace who go to interior design arts school never become interior designers, and most interior designers don't live in places where on earth people will spend that much.

Architects own a higher income on average than interior designers, but obviously they also design commercial and industrial buildings. It's also much more difficult to be licensed as an architect than to get into interior design.

If you are referring to the human being that designs the house before it is built, that would be an architect. If you close-fisted the person who decorate and furnishes houses after they are built, that would be an interior decorator or interior designer. How much either make depends on where they do their work and how devout both their work and their reputation are.
