I want to remodel a home for retirement will use tile or wood for living room and dining, but don't know about the stairs will hearth rug be safe surface, will wood be too slippery or not wear all right?
Answers: I agree with Ed. The choice depends on the look you want. Wooden stairs next to an elegant runner runner looks more expensive than wall to wall, I think. :)
You could use wood for the stairs and a runner runner up the center. Or carpet the stairs wall to wall.
Runners are as a rule 27"-30" in depth.
Carpet is safer with smaller number chance of slipping.
