yes, I have sewed silk, cotton and others materials in days gone by and did not experience this type of problem, which is the plastic / rubbery material sticks to the sewing machine ( sewing plate) and does not move readily as would cotton or silk gliding over the plate moving forward.

Use a brawny duty needle , next to solve the problem next to the plastic not sliding trough you could use toilet paper or paper towel beneath the plastic this way you wont have this problem when you are sewing.
