Staining or fine art oak finish urethane crown moulding? We just finished installing some urethane oak finish crown moulding and filled...

We just finished installing some urethane oak finish crown moulding and filled pin holes and gaps with some oak finish wood putty. When we sand down the wood putty, the sanding process removes some finish from the moulding so it doesn't match the rest of the moulding, the white urethane shows through. We be thinking of lightly sanding adjectives of the moulding and then trying to stain the moulding so the appearance would be uniform, but aren't sure how well that would work, if the stain would "stick" to the urethane moulding. Our other pick is to paint the moulding, but we are also concerned that if we don't like the results after staining, if we would be able to paint over the stained portion next to white latex paint. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks in finance.
Answers:    Well this is just a wild guess..but I would try a brown Minwax color stick, or brown shoe polish.
