Re-painting a door ... facilitate!? My ex-husband painted my front door -- it's steel -- and...

My ex-husband painted my front door -- it's steel -- and did a pretty crappy job. Plus, I dislike the color AND he used an oil-based paint.

I'm ready to revise it in a different shade of blue, but I'm not sure where on earth to begin. The grease paint looks pretty bad, so I'd resembling to used just a regular outdoor latex paint (or anything you suggest). Can I do this over top of the oil paint? Also, I'm sculpture the wooden trim around the door (which has never be painted). Can I use the same product on it?

Thanks for any suggestion you can give me!
Answers:    First, sand the door accurate, and the trim. Apply a first coat of a good bonding primer(tinted to half-strength of the finish color) to both the door and the trim. Finish near a final coat of the paint of your choice.
You need to sand to start beside. Never apply latex over oil - it won't stick. There probably is a primer you can buy that will allow you to adaptation mid stream; check at a hardware store. Generally the trim around the door is a different color but you don't have to follow that rule. A house can enjoy only 2 colors on it, or 3 - it's your choice.
