Would painting a bedroom (fairly small, with a sloped ceiling,) one color (the walls and the ceiling) take home it depressing and claustrophobic? The color would probably be either dark blue or shade red. thanks!
Dark colors may make the room appear smaller. If you want to paint a dark color you should make sure you hold a lot of natural night light, and make any room furnishings (curtains, bed linens, etc) a lighter color. That should help the mood. dark colors tend to make rooms look smaller
go beside a lighter color
I work at a paint store as a side job. In a small room next to insufficient light, darker colors will fashion the room seem smaller. Doing the ceiling the same color when it's pitch-black will make it seem close to your in a box. Also different times of the day will spawn the colors look different so if your in a bright paint store make sure you purloin chips home and tape them on the wall. See how they look at different times of the day in the past you make your decision. Darker colors are collectively more expensive so you don't want to make a bad choice. The Banjamin Moore Aura is a great paint even though it is relatively expensive. Dark colors don't cover well sometimes. It may take up to 5 coats to fully cover. Aura however is self priming and the most it will give somebody a lift to cover is two coats; that's why its so expensive. Painting the room one "light" color would make the room seem larger... a shady color might not be a good idea. If the room have lots of natural lights.. windows ... skylight a gloom color might be good... if you were concerned roughly a day sleeper... However. block out shades or drapes would be a better option for a hours of daylight sleeper...
Think in terms of mirrors and accent and organization/non clutter to make the room appear larger.
Answers: Dark colors will make the room appear SMALLER, but not necessarily claustrophobic--unless you have a problem with small spaces. But if the room is a comfortable room to you very soon, changing the color of the paint shouldn't make it claustrophobic. If you truly hate dark red or depressing blue, then it might be depressing; but color seems to strike something within a persons emotions, so if you approaching those colors, then go near them. Blue tends to soothe most people, and red tend to energize, even in some of the dark shades. The only reason I wouldn't paint a small room within those dark colors is for resale appeal. But if you're going to enjoy the room for at most minuscule a couple of years--have it your way!
