I want to make a glutinous layer of polyurethane on my workbench. Can I merely place molding around the countertop and pour in the polyeruthane? (about 1/2 inch thick)
Answers: What you want is Bar Coating. It is mixed and poured on thoroughly thick. I hold to ask, how many times a week will you be have tours stop by to gaze at your "pretty bench"? Any coating you use will cut into. If you are looking for an artwork, go adjectives the way and use a router to cut grooves for gold ingots and silver inlays. Sounds like your bench will be more for looks than work.
Polyurethane become rubbery. Your best best would be either copious many coats of spar varnish or buy a sheet of gooey plexiglass. You might could try that decoupage stuff that used to be popular for embedding objects, as a craft project. Covering an entire workbench could be a problem, though, since any flexing of the table could result in your layer to crack.
