Most is finished - stained and sealed- how do i go about sculpture them white? can i just paint right on it? do i need to sand them first? do i stipulation to seal them a certain instrument? thanks! i appreciate the help!
you must sand thru the shine on the existing finish and then wipe down beside mineral spirits to remove any wax. Then use a good primer/sealer colored to closely match your finish color.Light sand of the primer and your ready for the final finish paint. You can do this job near a paint brush, but it is much easier with a spray gun. If all else fail you can rent a HVLP spray outfit from the local retail store.
Good luck ask a car bodyshop to spray paint for you. some won't do it. but if you find a shop that will, then you own to protect all the areas that you don't want the paint to touch. must faster than doing it yourself
While meant for kitchen cabinets, this is a accurate primer (no pun intended) guide for painting finished wood.

In a nutshell: the existing surface must be clean and dull. You should also avoid "latex" paint as it is not rather durable enough for furniture. Done with supervision, you will have good results.
I also recommend getting Penetrol and using that as a conditioner for oil-based paint. It will aid it flow out and level better (reducing brush marks).
Answers: I would sand, after prime it, and then paint. It might be a little time consuming but you won't hold to paint them again! Best of luck on your project!
lightly sand. use a primer. tolerate primer dry fully. then paint white.
