I want to paint very old stained baseboards and door jam without sanding sooner. Is there something I can put on them prior to painting that will backing the paint to stick? Otherwise the paint just kind of slides on and doesn't grip well.
do a layer of primer first (kilz paint found at walmart) . after paint.

There sure is something, it is called liquid sand newspaper, or a few other different names, they all do like peas in a pod, they strip that "gloss" /finish off the wood and allow it to be painted, primed whatever. GO to your nearest ICI Delux outlet, they will enjoy the product you need. It is extremely easy to use, and the results own never failed me in 15 years. Get a well-mannered primer like Zinsser(?) and then paint. I did that and it be so much easier than sanding, priming then drawing. Water based is far easier, and less smelly, than grease based primer, and paint.
Answers:    Wash it well and apply a solution glossier. It will not or should I say will feel a bit tacky when it is dry then paint. Never fall through.
