Painting 101? Okay, so half passageway up my hall channel is that ugly brown...

Okay, so half passageway up my hall channel is that ugly brown wood panelling. I am wanting to paint it white. I am not sure what to paint the top partly of the wall tho. It does have a glutinous border the transitions the panelling and the wall, so I think white on white woudl be boring, and unusual looking. However my husband is concerened because our bedroom walls are red, and our office walls are brown and he think its important to own one theme for the entire house. Is this true? You cant even see our rooms or the bureau unless you opened our bedroom door or organization door. Please someone give me some much needed guidance on what to do....and colors! Oh by the way the mat is a beige.
Answers:    The paneling below the stool rail trim is call wainscoting. Generally you pain the wainscoting a dark color than the top portion of the wall but anything goes. One counsel: Don't paint the top and bottom the same color! Today's paint theme are No Paint Themes, especially if you can't see them all at once!
Tans and soft whites would progress well-make sure you primer the paneling first-it will help next to the second coat of paint as well.
