We are going to replace the bathtub that come with our house, built within 1986, but we can not decide whether or not to of late get a regular hip bath combination shower or just the tub and tile the shower walls...any suggestions or experience with this that anyone would know how to recommend either path?
Answers: There's alot to consider here. The way I look at it you hold three options: fiberglass/vinyl insert, tile employment with tub, cultured marble available job with tub.
If you want to position them as far as ease of installation: the total insert is by far the easiest, followed by the cultured marble panel and then the tile commission. Obviously, once you drop the insert in place and trademark the edges you're essentially home free. The cultured marble panels can be appplied directly to your drywall next to adhesive so you only have to stamp the seams beside silicone. However, tile is typically alot more work. Some people will only just apply the tile to the wall but I personally assume that is a VERY fruitless idea for a shower. If you want to do it right, you really should replace the drywall next to durock or something similar, waterproof it and after tile. It's not an impossible task but it does pilfer some skill and it's certainly more work.
Relative cost and return on your money. The charge is about indistinguishable although I 'm not sure how the insert and marble compare. Tile would defintely be more money plus you'll have some supplementary tools to consider renting or buying. However, return for resale is a different story. You really won't get anything out of an insert since that's the minimum a home buyer would expect. The cultured marble would unquestionably add plus but it's not going to be a huge return. However, you can probaly expect to get in the region of double in resale for what you put into a bathroom near a good tile brief.
If you're looking at maintenance, we're vertebrae to the same establish: insert, marble, tile...easiest to most work.
Out of all of these, the most crucial consideration is personal preference. In my house, the kids bathroom is an insert. It looks fine, assured to clean and we don't hold to worry in the order of it. In the master bath we have cultured marble but we got bored near it after about 9 years and have some issues with keeping the silicone contained by the seams verbs. So, we ripped it all out and did tile. It took a while but we are really lively with the results.

What type of flooring is surrounded by the room? Do you have another shower?
I really similar to look of tile, but not cleaning it. I would recommend using a medium/dark grout.
